Capcom has just released a new addition to its most popular franchise: the Monster Hunter. There just seem to be so many Monster Hunter releases. You have Monster Hunter World, Monster Hunter Rise, and even an action movie.
Capcom is a dynamic company. From Resident Evil and Street Fighter to Monster Hunter and Ace Attorney. They make games (even slot games) in which you get lost for hours. It seems that no matter if your preference is the fantasy genre or to play online slots, Capcom has you covered. You start with the intention of playing for just one 1 hour, but you have so much fun that you stay playing for hours.
The story drives the game
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a game focused on the stories. Before, you hunted monsters, used them for new weapons and gear, and then went again and hunted even more giant monsters. You still do that, but the game has a slower pace, is more relaxed, and allows you to focus more on the story and not just the action.
The animation is excellent. The goal here was not to be realistic but rather more “anime” style. It has bright colours, strong contrasts, and a great art direction. Simply put, the environment and monsters in the game look amazing.
In the game, we follow a character known as “Rider.” It is up to him to solve the problems created when a group of hunters attacked a special Rathalos who disappeared with all the other Rathalos. Without them, the balance of nature can get disrupted. Then, a girl with the last Rathalos egg appears, and from it comes a white Rathalos with black wings prophesized to bring the end of the world. Hence “wings of ruin.” And so the quest begins.
Fun, simple, and enjoyable
Fundamentally, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is an RPG. The fights are turn-based and strategic. They are not complicated but rather like Pokemon battles that operate on the rock-paper-scissor principle. Sometimes fights in games like this can become monotone and boring, but Wings of Ruin doesn’t have that problem. You never feel like you are wasting time; it just feels fun.
The main story can take more than 40 hours, but the game is so much more enjoyable if you immerse yourself in the world and do side quests. You never know what can happen or what awaits you behind the next tree. It could be a new weapon – or a new boss. The game is just so full of life.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a fun spinoff from the popular franchise. It is not a complicated game (and neither are the fights), but one made for enjoyment. There is no need for massive tutorials, and the learning curve isn’t steep. Instead, the story is what keeps the game going forward. In the end, if you love finding and training monsters Pokemon-style, then this game should be on your bucket list.
And if you don’ – it still might give you 40 to 50 hours of enjoyable, fun, and simple gameplay.
